Nairo Quintana Suffers Injury

Nairo Quintana ruptured a ligament in his arm during the Volta a Catalunya crash last month. He will miss the Tour of Alps.

What happened?

The Colombian cyclist crashed twice in the Volta a Catalunya. The second crash forced him to abandon on the last day.

Why it matters for Nairo Quintana

Quintana returned to racing in 2024 after a year-long hiatus. He was set to compete in the Tour of Alps and the Giro d’Italia.

What comes next?

The 33-year-old cyclist will spend several weeks recovering from the crash. No date has been set for his return to racing.

Nairo Quintana has an almost complete rupture of the clavicular ligament in his upper right arm. His team reported that he will not compete in the Tour of the Alps.

The Tour of the Alps runs from April 15-19. Quintana was then due to head to the Giro d’Italia, which starts in Turin on May 4.

Nairo Quintana won the Giro d’Italia in 2016. He also won the Vuelta a España.

The Colombian cyclist's early season program was truncated by a positive COVID-19 test. He returned to European racing at the Volta a Catalunya.

Nairo Quintana performed in a support role for teammate Enric Mas prior to his crash. He was unable to find a team for 2023 due to his positive test for tramadol.

In-competition use of tramadol was barred by the UCI in 2019. It was added to the WADA banned list from January 1, 2024.

Nairo Quintana's team will communicate his next races shortly. The latest update on his injury will be reported as soon as available.
