Max Verstappen Regrets Rejecting Mercedes Move, Claims Guenther Steiner

Max Verstappen may regret rejecting a move to Mercedes, according to former Haas team principal Guenther Steiner. The Dutch driver stayed at Red Bull despite Mercedes' interest, but Steiner believes that opportunity is now gone.

Steiner told the Red Flags Podcast that Verstappen hesitated when Mercedes was considering its long-term driver lineup. He argues the reigning world champion missed his best chance to switch teams.

'I think he absolutely regrets not taking the opportunity when it was there,' Steiner said. 'He waited because nobody knew how the new regulations would play out and Red Bull convinced him to stay. But now I think that opportunity has gone.'

Why Does Steiner Think Verstappen Regrets It?

Steiner points to Mercedes' current driver lineup as the reason. He believes the team is committed to George Russell and young prospect Kimi Antonelli, making a move for Verstappen unlikely.

'They've got George Russell, who is doing a fantastic job, and they've got Kimi Antonelli coming through,' Steiner explained. 'Why would they spend more money and upset that balance when they already have two drivers they believe in?'

What About Verstappen's Future at Red Bull?

Despite the speculation, Steiner doesn't expect Verstappen to leave Red Bull soon. He says the four-time world champion will stay unless the team becomes uncompetitive.

'If Red Bull gives him a competitive car, he'll stay,' Steiner said. 'That's what it comes down to now. The ball is in Red Bull's court.'

Verstappen has publicly stated he's focused on driving for Red Bull, where he's enjoyed unprecedented success. His current contract keeps him with the team for the foreseeable future.
