Marcus Rashford Speaks Out On FIFA's Mexico Kick-Off Change Plan

Marcus Rashford has become the first England player to speak out over FIFA's reported plan to change the kick-off time of their last 16 clash against Mexico on Sunday. The Manchester United forward described the uncertainty as 'not ideal' but emphasized England's ability to adapt.

What happened?

The proposed change would move the kick-off time from 6pm local to 12pm due to the threat of thunderstorms in the area.

Why it matters for Marcus Rashford

Rashford's comments come as the FA is said to be 'deeply concerned' over the plan, particularly regarding travelling England fans.

The Met Office forecasts potential thunderstorms in Mexico City for around an hour before kick-off at the Estadio Azteca. US government protocols mandate that outdoor activities are suspended for 30 minutes after each lightning strike.

What comes next?

Any change could threaten the kick-off of Brazil's last 16 clash against Norway, which is due to get underway at 2pm ET. A spokesperson for the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) has told The Athletic that 'a change is possible', and that they are awaiting further instruction or detail from FIFA.

Marcus Rashford's loan at Barcelona expired on June 30. He has described England's preparation for the game as unchanged, despite the uncertainty.

His Three Lions team-mate Morgan Rogers echoed Rashford's comments, stating that the team will 'attack it full throttle and be ready'. Rogers emphasized the team's strength in being prepared for any challenge.

The match is due to take place on Sunday, with the original kick-off time set for 6pm local. The proposed change would mean a switch from 1am on Monday morning to 7pm on Sunday evening in the UK.

Mexico's last 32 clash against Ecuador was delayed by an hour due to the weather. Two hours elapsed between half-time and the second half getting underway in the group stage match between France and Iraq.

France's last 16 fixture against Paraguay could see temperatures of over 37 degrees Celsius hit Philadelphia. The match is due to kick off at 5pm local time amid concerns.

SPORTbible has contacted FIFA for comment on matters relating to the reported kick-off change plan. The situation remains uncertain, with England and Mexico set to face off on Sunday.
