Marco Odermatt Wins Crystal Trophy, Breaks It at World Cup Finals

Marco Odermatt collected his newest trophy, but it didn't last long. He broke it.

What happened?

The Swiss standout was in the finish area picking up the pieces after collecting his giant slalom crystal globe.

Odermatt went to toss his trophy into the air when it clanged off the medal around his neck and shattered into several shards.

Why it matters for Marco Odermatt

He now has 13 World Cup season-long trophies, including four in giant slalom, two in downhill, three in super-G, and four for capturing the overall crown.

Odermatt finished the giant slalom race runner-up to his teammate Loic Meillard, who held on to his first-run lead and cruised to the win on a sun-splashed course.

What comes next?

Odermatt is not planning on ordering a replacement trophy, and instead sees the broken trophy as a nice story to share with his coaches.

He can afford to break a few trophies, given his impressive collection.

Odermatt struggled to start the giant slalom season with two DNFs, but finished on the podium in the next seven races, including three wins.

The accident happened when Odermatt was celebrating with his Swiss team, and it's not the first time he has broken a trophy.

He dropped his first World Cup podium finish trophy in 2019, and still has half of it at home.

Meillard finished the race in a combined time of 2 minutes, 15.21 seconds, beating Odermatt by 0.95 seconds, while Henrik Kristoffersen finished third.

Odermatt's teammate Loic Meillard said that competing against him pushes him to try to learn from each other and always get better year after year.

Meillard joked that he is better than Odermatt at the moment, but acknowledged that Odermatt is pretty good.

Odermatt's broken trophy will be a nice history to share with his coaches, and he doesn't see it as bad luck.

Instead, it's a symbol that his beginning of the season was not the best, but he recovered to win another globe, which is incredible.
