Leon Marchand Eyes Maiden Title at European Championships

Leon Marchand is set to compete for his maiden European senior title at the European Aquatics Championships, which begin on July 31. The French swimmer has yet to win a European medal, despite being a seven-time world champion.

What's at Stake for Leon Marchand?

The 23-year-old will have his first chance to claim a European title in the men's 400IM, the first final to be contested. Marchand holds the 200IM world records in both long and short-course pools and the 400IM global standard.

The European Championships will run from July 31 to August 16, with the pool programme taking place from August 10. The swimming events will be held at the Olympic Aquatic Centre in Paris St Denis.

Previous Performances

Marchand finished 14th in the 200 fly semis and 28th in the 200 breast prelims at the 2020 Europeans, which were held in 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, he went on to win the medley double at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, setting a European record of 4:04.28 in the 400IM.

The men's 100m and 200m freestyle finals will take place on August 12 and 14, respectively. David Popovici won the world double in these events in Singapore last year.

The Competition

Great Britain are the Olympic and world men's 4×2 champions but have not topped the European podium since 2018. The squad will reunite in Paris to compete for gold in the final race of the opening night.

The open water swimming events will start in the River Seine on August 4 and conclude on August 8. The diving events will run from July 31 to August 6, while the artistic swimming events will take place from July 31 to August 5.

Leon Marchand will be looking to add to his impressive medal haul, which includes four golds and a relay bronze from the 2021 French championships. The 200IM is one of nine finals on the last day of the championships, with the 200m breaststroke and 200 fly finals taking place on August 13 and 15, respectively.

The European Aquatics Championships will feature a strong field of competitors, including Marrit Steenbergen, who won four golds among seven medals at the 2022 European Championships in Rome. Simona Quadarella has eight European titles in the distance events and will be competing in the 800 and 1500 finals on August 11 and 13, respectively.
