LeBron James nears NBA decision: Heat lead as Sixers stay in mix

LeBron James will finalize his next NBA destination in the coming days after the four-time MVP opted against re-signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. The 37-year-old superstar is weighing suitors including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Golden State Warriors, with markets showing Miami as the current favorite.

Where LeBron James stands in the race

Prediction markets have shifted sharply in favor of the Miami Heat over the weekend. As of July 20 at 9:25 a.m. ET, Kalshi gave Miami a 46% chance to land James, up 2 percentage points from Friday. The Cleveland Cavaliers sat at 33%, while the Golden State Warriors held 13%. The Philadelphia 76ers trailed at 9%, with the Minnesota Timberwolves at 3%.

Polymarket’s numbers told a similar story. The Heat led at 49%, a 32-point jump from their prior mark. Cleveland dropped to 31%, Golden State fell to 10%, and the Sixers rose to 7%. The Timberwolves sat at 1%.

Teams still in the mix for LeBron James

Rich Paul, James’ agent with Klutch Sports, outlined the top contenders on the “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman. The whiteboard session included the Sixers, Heat, Timberwolves, Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Warriors, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported those options had narrowed to Cleveland, Miami, Philadelphia and Golden State. Executives from interested teams have sent voice notes to Paul, who passed them to James. “There’s a focus on Cleveland, Miami and Philadelphia,” Charania said in a July 14 report. “This could be any day, any week, now,” he added, noting James was getting closer to a decision.

When will LeBron James make his move?

Markets are betting on a quick resolution. Kalshi’s probabilities show a 22% chance James signs before July 21, 55% before July 23 and 80% before July 26. The odds climb to 90% by July 29 and 94% by July 31, before capping at 97% by August 16.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, speaking on 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, said the league expects a call within the week. “A source familiar with LeBron really believes he’s nearing the decision,” McMenamin said. “People around the league are hoping it comes next week. I would say there’s a pretty decent chance we find out next week.”

Why the Philadelphia 76ers still have a shot

Though Miami leads the chase, the Sixers remain in the mix. McMenamin stressed their legitimacy as a destination. “I was told, as of last night, he still hasn’t made his final decision,” he said. The Sixers’ roster, anchored by Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, offers a championship window James has never closed the door on.

The Cavs, meanwhile, represent the sentimental choice. James has hinted at a possible return to Cleveland to finish his career, but nothing is guaranteed. Golden State’s veteran core and Miami’s culture-first approach keep them alive as well.
