Larry Bird's French Lick legacy extends beyond basketball

2026-07-16 · Larry Bird · Player Focus

Larry Bird's name dominates conversations about French Lick, Indiana, but the town's sports history runs deeper than basketball. The Hall of Famer's legacy intertwines with MLB spring training, boxing legends, and even Chicago's underworld.

What makes French Lick special beyond Bird?

French Lick and neighboring West Baden were once bitter high school basketball rivals. Beyond Bird's Springs Valley High School, the towns hosted World Series champions for spring training. Heavyweight boxing legend Joe Louis trained at West Baden Springs.

The area's allure extended to Chicago's underworld. Mob boss Big Jim Colosimo married at West Baden Springs, and Al Capone reportedly frequented the towns to escape Chicago's spotlight.

How does Bird's legacy live on in French Lick?

Springs Valley High School athletic director Jerry Chaney gives about 20 tours annually to Bird fans from across the U.S. The gym displays Bird's No. 33 jerseys from his Celtics, Team USA, Indiana State, and high school careers.

Chaney, who grew up 28 miles away in Bedford, recalls staying up late to watch Bird's delayed Celtics broadcasts. The gym also features photos of Bird's brothers Mark and Eddie, the latter an Indiana All-Star who played at Indiana State from 1987-1991.

What other sports history does French Lick hold?

The towns' sports history includes more than Bird's basketball fame. MLB teams once used French Lick and West Baden for spring training. The area's blend of sports and history continues to attract visitors.

Chaney embraces his role as unofficial historian, sharing the town's stories with fans. He notes that mentioning Springs Valley often leads to Bird-related questions, highlighting the athlete's lasting impact on the community.
