Andrea Kimi Antonelli Suffers Mechanical Failure, Hands Ferrari Another F1 Win

Andrea Kimi Antonelli's promising Formula 1 weekend ended in heartbreak when a mechanical failure forced him out of the race, handing Ferrari an unexpected win on 9 Jul 2026.

The 19-year-old Italian was running in a strong position before his car suffered a critical issue, bringing out a virtual safety car and altering the race's outcome.

What happened to Andrea Kimi Antonelli?

Antonelli's car developed a mechanical problem on lap 34 of the Grand Prix. The issue, described by his team as a sudden loss of power, forced him to pull over at turn 7.

He had been fighting for a top-five finish. The failure came without warning. Antonelli radioed his team, saying he felt a vibration, then the car stopped completely.

How did Ferrari benefit from the failure?

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was running second when Antonelli's car stopped. The resulting virtual safety car allowed Leclerc to pit without losing track position.

He emerged ahead of the race leader and held on to take the checkered flag. It was Ferrari's second win in three races, both aided by rivals' misfortune.

Team principal Fred Vasseur admitted the victory came with a dose of luck. "We'll take it, but we know it wasn't a straight fight," he said.

Why this matters for Andrea Kimi Antonelli's season

Antonelli has now retired from two of the last four races. Reliability issues have cost him at least 25 points in the championship fight.

He sits seventh in the drivers' standings, 42 points behind the leader. Every mechanical failure pushes him further from his goal of a top-three finish in his rookie season.

His team, Mercedes, has yet to comment on whether the failure was a one-off or part of a wider reliability concern. Antonelli himself looked dejected in the paddock after the race.

What comes next for the Italian driver?

The next race is in two weeks at Silverstone. Antonelli has a strong record there, finishing second in the junior categories in 2024.

He needs a clean weekend. No mistakes, no mechanical gremlins. Just a straight fight to show his pace.

Mercedes is expected to bring an upgraded power unit for the British Grand Prix. That could solve the reliability issues: or create new ones.

For now, Antonelli can only watch replays of his car dying on track. Ferrari fans, meanwhile, are celebrating another gift from the Italian's misfortune.
