Kalyn Ponga fires despite Knights’ loss to Cronulla in sodden NRL clash

Newcastle coach Justin Holbrook has rallied to defend Kalyn Ponga after the skipper’s uncharacteristic errors cost the Knights a 20-18 loss to Cronulla in sodden conditions at Shark Park on Friday night.

What happened in the Knights’ latest loss?

The Knights outscored Cronulla four tries to three yet fell short in a tight contest played in heavy rain. Ponga, who had just returned from State of Origin duties, played his 11th NRL season under a brutal nine-day schedule that included five Origin minutes. He still finished with a try, 130 metres from 13 runs, six tackle breaks and one line break.

Why Holbrook stood by Ponga’s workload

Holbrook labelled the demands on Ponga “a lot to ask” after the fullback lined up for his third game in nine days. “We’ve got a really good footy side here and poor Kalyn-that’s three games in nine days,” the coach said. “That’s a lot to ask of anybody, let alone your best player.”

Despite the errors, Holbrook insisted Newcastle did enough to win. “You’re probably unlucky to lose the game. I thought we did enough. It’s hard to swallow because we expect a lot of our team now.”

How Ponga responded to the criticism

Ponga shrugged off talk of a slump, pointing to the mental grind of back-to-back Origin and a five-day turnaround. “I feel pretty good,” he said. “We lost and that makes things worse but it’s more of a mental thing.” He added that recovery routines and support staff keep him fresh despite the workload.

The 28-year-old’s regular conversion rate sits around 76 per cent for Newcastle, yet his focus stayed on the bigger picture. “Physically you’ve just got to make sure you get everything right,” he said. “I’ve got enough support from staff and everyone around me to get everything right.”

What’s next for Newcastle and Ponga?

The loss dropped Newcastle to seventh on the NRL ladder. Holbrook admitted frustration but pointed to six games this year where the Knights started with their preferred spine. “We created enough chances to win,” he said. “That’s why it’s disappointing.”

The schedule eases slightly in the coming weeks, offering Ponga and his teammates a chance to reset. Holbrook urged the squad to push on, insisting there’s “a lot of belief in this team.”
