Jorge Martín Fights for Second at Italian Grand Prix

Jorge Martín finished second at the Italian Grand Prix on May 30. He was beaten by Raul Fernandez, who took his first MotoGP sprint victory.

What happened?

The race started chaotically, with pole sitter Marco Bezzecchi having a poor getaway.

Marc Marquez stormed off the second row and led into turn one.

But Fernandez, Martín, and Diogo Moreira quickly overtook him.

Martín cut Bezzecchi's lead to 12 points ahead of Sunday's race.

He found another gear and reduced the gap with every lap until he was less than half a second behind Fernandez.

Martín said, "We always try to fight for the podium and this was my target today, I felt great."

What comes next?

Fernandez moved up to fifth in the championship standings with the victory.

Martín will look to build on his second-place finish in the next race.

The victory was redemption for Fernandez, who had collided with Martín at the Catalan Grand Prix earlier this month.

Martín did his best, but Fernandez was impressive, taking the chequered flag nearly a second ahead of him.

Fernandez started second on the grid and surged into the lead halfway through the opening lap.

He never looked back, beating Martín by more than a second after the factory rider had cut the gap with three laps remaining.

VR46 Racing's Fabio Di Giannantonio completed the podium, while championship leader Marco Bezzecchi finished fourth ahead of Ducati's Marc Marquez in fifth.
