Jon Rahm reveals Royal Birkdale strategy ahead of Open Championship

Jon Rahm has revealed his tactical approach for the 2026 Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, emphasizing precision over power. The Spanish golfer, known for his aggressive play, is adjusting his game to navigate the challenging links course.

What’s Jon Rahm’s new strategy?

Rahm, a two-time major winner, plans to focus on smart shot selection rather than relying solely on his explosive driving. He believes Royal Birkdale’s narrow fairways and deep rough demand a more calculated game plan. 'It’s not about how far you hit it, but where you hit it,' Rahm said.

Why is this a shift for Rahm?

The 31-year-old has built his career on raw power, often leading the PGA Tour in driving distance. However, past Open Championship struggles-including a missed cut in 2023-have prompted a rethink. 'I’ve learned that links golf requires patience,' he admitted.

Can Rahm’s plan succeed?

Royal Birkdale’s undulating greens and penal rough will test Rahm’s new approach. His best Open finish was T-18 in 2021, but he’s confident this strategy will yield better results. 'I’ve practiced this style for months,' he said. 'Now it’s time to execute.'

What’s next for Rahm?

Rahm tees off in the first round on July 17, paired with Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. If his strategy works, he could challenge for his third major title. 'I’m not changing who I am,' Rahm said. 'Just adapting to win.'
