Jimmie Johnson Celebrates Foundation's 20th Anniversary

Jimmie Johnson, the seven-time NASCAR champion, is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his foundation this weekend. On 18 Jun, Johnson hosted a golf tournament at the RiverWalk Golf Club in Mission Valley, with proceeds benefiting the American Legion.

What has the foundation achieved?

The Jimmie Johnson Foundation has completed projects benefiting 52 schools in San Diego County, as well as schools in Charlotte, N.C., and Oklahoma.

How has the foundation helped the community?

Twice, the foundation worked with then-Johnson sponsor Lowe’s to provide relief and aid to victims of San Diego County wildfires. Johnson’s foundation oversaw the construction of four Habitat for Humanity Homes in El Cajon.

What's next for Jimmie Johnson?

After Sunday, Johnson will have only one more race in his NASCAR Cup career: next February’s Daytona 500. But the 50-year-old will continue to drive in other forms of racing.

Johnson can see himself in the cockpit of his car for an event like the 24 Hours of Daytona. He also wants to get back into off-road racing in the TrophyTruck division.

The Legacy Motorsports Club operation that Johnson heads is coming off one of its strongest weekends. John Hunter Nemecheck finished fourth in his first top-five finish of the season and led a race-high 42 laps.

Erik Jones finished sixth and is now 15th in the season standings with four top-10 finishes. He also finished third on May 17 at Dover.

As a team, Legacy is still looking for its first NASCAR Cup victory. Johnson said, “It’s getting closer. We’re still building the cake.”
