Israel Adesanya's Former Challenger Jared Cannonier Demands UFC Pay Hike

2026-07-19 · Israel Adesanya · Player Focus

Jared Cannonier, who lost a unanimous decision to Israel Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title at UFC 276 in July 2022, is now calling for a seven-figure contract. The 42-year-old veteran, ranked No. 9 at 185 pounds, says his resume warrants higher pay as he prepares to face Christian Leroy Duncan on July 18 in Oklahoma City.

What did Cannonier say about UFC fighter pay?

Cannonier, known as 'The Killa Gorilla,' criticized the UFC’s compensation model, comparing it to other major sports leagues. 'I would like to get paid the same way the highest level athletes in any sport get paid,' he told Full Send MMA. 'I should have million-dollar contracts at the stage I’m in. I’ve been top 10 for seven, eight years.'

Why does this matter for Israel Adesanya?

Adesanya, the former UFC middleweight champion, defeated Cannonier in a five-round title fight two years ago. Cannonier’s pay dispute highlights the financial disparities in MMA, where even top contenders like him earn far less than stars in other sports. The UFC has faced lawsuits over fighter compensation, including a $375 million settlement approved in 2025.

What’s next for Cannonier?

Cannonier faces England’s Christian Leroy Duncan at UFC Oklahoma City on July 18. A win could boost his case for higher pay, but he remains frustrated with the UFC’s pay structure. 'I’m not complaining, but it’s how I feel,' he said, echoing a long-standing debate in MMA.
