Holger Rune confirms US Open return plan with intense comeback training

Holger Rune has taken a major step toward his ATP Tour comeback after posting footage of himself training at near-full intensity.

What happened to Holger Rune?

The Danish star suffered an Achilles injury during the 2025 Stockholm Open in October. Scans later revealed a fracture in the proximal part of his left Achilles, forcing him to undergo surgery. Rune has been sidelined for nearly nine months, dropping from world No. 4 to No. 81 in the ATP rankings.

How did Holger Rune respond to US Open questions?

A fan asked on Instagram whether Rune would play the 2024 US Open. His reply was short and direct: “That’s the plan.” The comment fueled speculation that he’s targeting the Grand Slam as his first major return. His latest training clip shows him hitting with intensity, a sign his rehab is advancing.

Why the delay before Holger Rune’s comeback?

Rune initially aimed to return during the clay swing but pushed it back. He skipped Queen’s Club and Wimbledon, citing recovery progress. The Dane also pulled out of the 2024 Hamburg Open and Roland Garros, missing key clay events. His protected ranking gives him flexibility to enter majors without ranking pressure.

Where could Holger Rune play next?

He’s not entered in the 2024 Canadian Open. His next possible stops are the 2024 Cincinnati Open, starting August 13, or the US Open, which begins later in August. Rune’s protected ranking covers majors and high-stakes events, letting him ease back without ranking risk.

Before the injury, Rune had climbed to No. 4 in the world and won the 2022 Paris Masters. His return aims to rebuild momentum on the biggest stages after months away.
