Grigor Dimitrov Suffers Injury Setback

2026-06-27 · Grigor Dimitrov · Match Report

Grigor Dimitrov was in tears as he left Wimbledon on July 7, 2025. He had to retire from his Round of 16 match against Jannik Sinner due to an injury to his right pectoral muscle.

What happened?

Dimitrov took the first two sets, 6-3 and 7-5, but started feeling the injury while serving in the third set. He was tied with Sinner 2-2 when the pain became unbearable.

The injury

Dimitrov could be seen saying “my pec,” and after the serve, he quickly grabbed at the area in pain. Trainers looked at Dimitrov on the sideline, and he was in tears before walking off the court.

Reaction from Jannik Sinner

Sinner said, “I don’t know what to say. He is an incredible player, we all saw this today. He’s been so unlucky in the past couple of years.” Sinner added that he hopes Dimitrov has a speedy recovery.

Dimitrov walked off the court to loud cheers from the crowd as Sinner helped him carry his bag back to the locker room. That’s when the emotions really started to flow for Dimitrov.

What comes next?

Sinner advanced to the quarterfinals and will take on American Ben Shelton on Wednesday. Dimitrov's injury marked the fifth consecutive Grand Slam that he was forced to retire.

Sinner has his own injury concern to deal with, having hurt his elbow when he fell early in the match. He will have an MRI exam on Tuesday to check if there’s something serious.

Dimitrov's exit from Wimbledon was his second consecutive year of retiring from a match due to injury. Last year, he had to exit due to an abductor tear in his leg.

Sinner praised Dimitrov's performance, saying, “He served incredibly well, very precise. Also very fast. Changed up the game very very good.” Dimitrov was playing some great tennis before his injury, and Sinner wished him a speedy recovery.

The crowd showed their appreciation for Dimitrov as he left the court. His injury was a heartbreaking end to his Wimbledon bid.
