Giannis Antetokounmpo trade: Pat Riley reveals anxiety over Heat deal

Miami Heat president Pat Riley revealed the emotional toll of acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis Jr. in a blockbuster trade, calling it 'three weeks of anxiety.' The deal, finalized on July 6, sent the two-time MVP and his teammate from the Milwaukee Bucks to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel'el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, and draft capital.

What did Pat Riley say about the trade?

Riley described the period between the June 23 agreement and the July 6 official announcement as a time of high stress. 'We couldn’t talk to anybody until the sixth,' he said. 'After the sixth, we could actually talk to the players.' The Heat introduced Portis first, followed by Antetokounmpo, marking a new era for the franchise.

Why is Bobby Portis Jr. important to the Heat?

Riley praised Portis as an 'old school player' who could have thrived in past eras. 'He could have played for me with the Knicks,' Riley said. 'He could have played back in the day with the Lakers.' Portis, 31, averaged 13.7 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.6 assists last season, shooting 48.8% from the field and 45.6% from three. His 88 career double-doubles off the bench rank second in NBA history.

What’s next for the Heat?

Riley expressed confidence in the team’s foundation after the trade. Miami also signed Andrew Wiggins to a new contract and added Tim Hardaway Jr. for shooting depth. With Antetokounmpo and Portis joining Bam Adebayo and Nikola Jovic, the Heat are poised for a competitive season. Riley’s anxiety may be over, but the work to build a championship contender continues.
