George Russell crashes out of Belgian GP after Hamilton collision on lap 1

George Russell’s Belgian Grand Prix ended inside the opening lap at Spa-Francorchamps after a first-corner clash with Lewis Hamilton pitched the Mercedes driver into the gravel.

What happened?

On lap 1 at Les Combes, Russell lost three positions down the Kemmel Straight before Hamilton’s front wheel made contact with his rear. The impact sent Russell spinning off the track, ending his race before it began. A safety car followed, and the FIA opened an investigation into the incident.

Hamilton received a five-second penalty for the contact. The stewards ruled he lost control of his car after running deep under Russell’s rear wing, where downforce dropped sharply.

Sky Sports commentator David Croft said stewards have handed penalties in the past for similar oversteer-induced contact. Martin Brundle, the ex-F1 driver and Sky pundit, argued Russell left more than a car’s width on the inside and called the clash a racing incident.

Russell’s title hopes took a huge dent at Spa. With Antonelli likely to extend his lead after taking the win, Russell now faces a bigger points gap to the championship front-runner.

The FIA’s decision on Hamilton’s penalty stands, but the incident leaves Russell needing a strong run in the next races to stay in the hunt. His next outing comes at the Dutch GP on 24 August.

Russell said: “I just got totally swallowed up down the straight. The incident was a racing incident. Maybe I could have gone wider, maybe he could have braked a bit more. Very disappointed.”

Hamilton, 41, had argued he lost downforce under Russell’s rear wing and felt squeezed up the inside on the first lap. The stewards disagreed and applied the penalty.
