Francisco Lindor's Struggles Make Him a Risky Trade Target for Red Sox

Francisco Lindor's 2026 season has been a far cry from his MVP-caliber performances, making him a risky trade target for the Boston Red Sox as the August 3rd deadline approaches. The 32-year-old shortstop has struggled with injuries and subpar batting stats, raising doubts about his value to a contending team.

Why Lindor isn’t the answer for Boston

Lindor’s once-elite production has plummeted this year. Through 40 games, he’s batting just .216 with a .671 OPS-far below his career averages. His five home runs and 12 RBIs pale in comparison to past seasons, including his 2024 NL MVP runner-up campaign. At this stage, his 10-year, $341 million contract looks like a liability, not an asset.

Better options exist for the Red Sox

Boston’s needs at catcher, DH, and shortstop could be filled by younger, more reliable players. Jeremy Peña, a Gold Glove defender with consistent offense, fits Fenway’s dimensions better. Meanwhile, Nationals slugger James Wood-if available-would inject power into Boston’s lineup. His near-30-homer pace makes him a far more enticing target than Lindor.

What’s next for Lindor and the Mets?

With trade rumors swirling, Lindor’s future in New York seems uncertain. His declining performance and hefty contract make him a tough sell, even for a team like the Red Sox. If Boston stays in the Wild Card hunt, they’ll need impact bats-but Lindor isn’t the solution.
