Faith Kipyegon’s Legacy Inspires Rising Star Longisa for Commonwealth Glory

2026-07-17 · Faith Kipyegon · Player Focus

Rosemary Longisa, the reigning NCAA 1,500m champion, is stepping into the spotlight as Faith Kipyegon transitions to longer distances. Longisa, 21, sees herself as the heir to Kipyegon’s legacy in the metric mile, a race the quadruple world champion has dominated for years.

What happened at the Commonwealth trials?

Longisa secured her spot on Kenya’s team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games after finishing third at the national trials on June 18. She clocked 4:10.01, behind Naomi Korir (4:08.57) and Teresiah Gateri (4:09.60). This will be her second time representing Kenya, following her debut at the World Indoor Championships in Poland earlier this year.

Why Faith Kipyegon’s move matters

Kipyegon has made it clear she’s shifting focus to longer distances, signaling the end of her reign in the 1,500m. Longisa, inspired by Kipyegon’s career, believes she can fill the void. "Faith inspires me a lot," Longisa said. "Every time I want to do something, I look at her career and say if she did it, then I can do it as well."

What’s next for Longisa?

Longisa will lead Kenya’s charge in the One Mile race at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. She’s been training hard to build endurance, adjusting to Kenya’s altitude and weather. Longisa also draws inspiration from fellow Kenyan middle-distance runners Susan Ejore and Dorcus Ewoi, who mentor her.

How Longisa is making her mark

Longisa’s rise includes winning the NCAA 1,500m title on June 13 with a time of 4:12.10. She’s steadily become a standout talent in the American collegiate circuit. Now, she’s ready to prove herself on the global stage, aiming to keep Kenya dominant in the 1,500m.
