Fabio Quartararo urged to leave Yamaha for Honda mid-season amid struggles

Fabio Quartararo’s MotoGP future is under fresh scrutiny after a string of poor results left the Frenchman’s Yamaha seat looking shaky.

What’s happening with Fabio Quartararo?

On 14 July 2026, calls grew louder for Yamaha to cut Fabio Quartararo loose mid-season and let him join Honda before his form does more damage. The 2021 MotoGP world champion has struggled for consistency this year, failing to crack the top five in five of his last six races. His qualifying performances have slipped too, with three Q2 exits in the last month alone.

Why the push for a Quartararo-Honda switch?

Insiders argue Yamaha’s patience is wearing thin. Quartararo’s contract runs through 2027, but his results no longer match the team’s ambitions. Honda, meanwhile, needs a proven star to replace Marc Márquez after his shock exit at the end of 2025. A mid-season swap could solve two problems at once: Yamaha cuts its losses, while Honda gains a rider with title-winning pedigree.

What’s next for the Frenchman?

Quartararo’s camp insists he’s focused on turning things around. But the pressure is mounting. If he fails to bounce back at the upcoming Sachsenring race on 20 July 2026, Yamaha may face tougher calls about his future. Honda’s technical director, Takeo Fukui, has already hinted the door remains open for “elite riders” seeking a fresh start.

How bad is Quartarano’s slump?

His 2026 season is a far cry from his 2021 title run. He’s scored just 58 points so far-12 behind teammate Franco Morbidelli. His worst finish? A 14th-place drop at the Catalan GP on 8 June 2026. Rivals like Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martín have stretched his lead in the standings to over 100 points.
