Errol Spence Jr. confirms retirement after loss to Tim Tszyu: career ends Saturday

Errol Spence Jr. will retire if he loses to Tim Tszyu on Saturday

Errol Spence Jr. has declared his career over if he loses to Tim Tszyu in Sydney on Saturday, 26 July 2025. His trainer Ronnie Shields confirmed the fighter’s stance on Fight Hub TV, framing the bout as a final statement rather than a comeback.

What did Spence say?

Spence told Shields before camp started that a defeat means the end. “If I was to come out and lose, my career is over. I’m done,” Shields recalled Spence saying. “There’s no sense in me trying to push for what?” The message was clear: this fight isn’t about rebuilding, it’s about control.

Why this fight matters for Spence

Spence hasn’t fought since July 2023, when Terence Crawford stopped him in the ninth round. Two knockdowns and a comprehensive loss left little doubt about the result. Shields said Spence “didn’t want to go out the way he went out” against Crawford. The Sydney return isn’t a title tilt or a multi-fight campaign-it’s a one-off chance to walk away on his own terms.

What happens if Spence wins?

Even a victory won’t guarantee more fights. Shields stressed Spence’s plan is short-term: “He may fight one, two, maybe three. But no more than three.” After that, Shields said, Spence will walk. “If he wins, he says, ‘You know what? That’s it. I’m satisfied with what I accomplished.’” The message is simple: this is the last chapter, no matter the outcome.

Spence’s legacy before the final curtain

Before the Crawford fight, Spence ruled welterweight. His unified title reign featured wins over Mikey Garcia, Danny Garcia, Yordenis Ugas, and Shawn Porter. The division’s best of his generation, he dominated until the 2023 setback. Three years away from sparring and the public fallout with former trainer Derrick James have only sharpened the focus on this exit.

Ronnie Shields is in the corner now. The plan is locked in. The only question left is whether Spence leaves as a winner-or walks away forever.
