Dominik Szoboszlai signs long-term Liverpool contract extension on 16 Jul 2026

Dominik Szoboszlai has agreed a new long-term contract with Liverpool, ending months of transfer speculation and locking him to the Reds until at least 2028.

What happened?

The 24-year-old Hungarian midfielder has finalised terms with Liverpool, according to Pool Baratok, a Hungarian Liverpool fan page on Facebook. The announcement confirms Szoboszlai will sign the new deal on 16 July 2026, just days after the club lost Ibrahima Konaté and Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid. His previous contract was set to expire in 2028, making this extension a priority for both player and club.

Why it matters for Dominik Szoboszlai

Szoboszlai has become one of Liverpool’s most influential players since joining from RB Leipzig in January 2023. Deployed as an attacking midfielder, central midfielder, or even right-back, he has carried the burden of the number 8 shirt once worn by Steven Gerrard. His versatility, technical quality, and match-winning set-piece ability have made him a fan favourite at Anfield. Szoboszlai’s free-kick technique-using small feet to generate power, dip, and pinpoint accuracy-has drawn comparisons to David Beckham and Lionel Messi.

What comes next?

With the vice-captaincy currently vacant, Szoboszlai is the frontrunner to fill the role. He already leads Hungary and could eventually succeed Virgil van Dijk as club captain when the Dutchman departs. Under new manager Andoni Iraola, Szoboszlai is expected to become the heartbeat of a more intense, pressing Liverpool side. The contract extension also ends any doubts over his future, securing his place in a crucial phase of the club’s rebuild.

Reaction and context

Liverpool’s failure to retain Konaté and Alexander-Arnold raised questions about their ability to keep top talent. Szoboszlai’s decision to stay-despite interest from elsewhere-sends a strong message about the club’s project under Iraola. His leadership, creativity, and resilience align with the values Liverpool supporters cherish, positioning him as a potential defining figure for the next era at Anfield.
