Denny Hamlin predicts 2026 NASCAR Chase field with five races left

Denny Hamlin names six drivers he expects to make the 2026 NASCAR Cup playoffs

Denny Hamlin has laid down a marker on the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series playoff picture.

On 18 June, Hamlin told reporters at Charlotte Motor Speedway that he sees six drivers already locked into the Chase for the NASCAR Cup Series title with five races still to run. The Joe Gibbs Racing veteran pointed to Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney, William Byron and Martin Truex Jr. as the drivers he believes have clinched their spots.

What happened?

Hamlin’s comments came during a media session at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where he addressed the crowded field chasing playoff spots. The six names he listed all sit in the top 12 of the points standings, with strong consistency and multiple wins already on their resumes this season.

The Joe Gibbs Racing driver added that the remaining battle will focus on who joins them from the next tier of contenders. With 16 playoff spots available, the fight for positions seven through 16 looks set to tighten over the final five races before the cutoff.

Why it matters for Denny Hamlin

For Hamlin, the prediction isn’t just talk. He’s chasing his own playoff return after missing the 2025 postseason for the first time in his career. His team has shown flashes of speed but needs consistency to secure a spot in the 16-driver field.

Hamlin’s remarks also signal confidence in the competition’s depth. By naming rivals like Larson and Elliott-drivers with multiple wins and top-10 streaks-he’s acknowledging the high bar for making the Chase this year.

What comes next?

The next five races will decide the final playoff grid. Hamlin’s own fate hinges on closing strong, with his team needing to avoid late-race mishaps and capitalize on stage points.

The cutoff race is the Cook Out 400 at Martinsville on 19 October. Any driver outside the top 16 after that event won’t make the Chase, setting up a dramatic finish to the regular season.

Fans and analysts will now watch closely to see if Hamlin’s forecast holds-or if an underdog like Kyle Busch or Tyler Reddick crashes the party.
