Cole Palmer shines in Chelsea fitness test under new boss Xabi Alonso

Cole Palmer has started Chelsea’s pre-season on a high, finishing second in a squad-wide bleep test under new manager Xabi Alonso. The 22-year-old midfielder, who struggled with a recurring groin injury last season, showcased his determination to regain full fitness ahead of the 2026-27 campaign. Alonso, who replaced Mauricio Pochettino, is emphasizing physical conditioning as a key focus for the Blues.

What happened in the bleep test?

Palmer’s strong performance in the bleep test highlights his commitment to overcoming last season’s injury setbacks. The test, conducted at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground, saw young midfielder Reggie Walsh top the rankings, with Brazilian sensation Estevao Willian rounding out the top three. Alonso praised Palmer’s attitude, stating, 'He wants to be fit. He wants to put behind him the injury setbacks he had to cope with last year.'

Why is fitness a priority for Chelsea?

Alonso’s appointment signals a shift in Chelsea’s approach, with the Spaniard given the title of 'manager' rather than 'head coach.' This change reflects his increased authority over the club’s sporting project. The former Bayern Munich boss has already begun reshaping the squad, holding talks with Enzo Fernandez and contacting new signings like Marco Palestra. Alonso believes the current squad has a 'strong base' but insists reinforcements are needed to compete in the Premier League.

What’s next for Palmer and Chelsea?

Chelsea’s demanding pre-season tour, which includes fixtures in Sydney, Hong Kong, Jakarta, and Johor, will test the squad’s fitness. The Blues are set to face elite opposition, including Tottenham, Juventus, and AC Milan. Alonso’s focus on physical conditioning will be crucial as Chelsea aim to return to the Champions League. Palmer, who Alonso plans to build the team around, will be key to this ambition.
