Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly backs C.J. Stroud over Baker Mayfield

Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly has publicly backed Houston Texans star C.J. Stroud over Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Kelly, a five-time Pro Bowler and Bills legend, made the endorsement in a recent interview aired on NFL Network on July 19, 2026.

What did the Hall of Famer say?

Kelly didn’t mince words when asked to compare Stroud and Mayfield. “C.J. Stroud is the better quarterback right now,” Kelly said. “He’s got the arm, the poise, and the football IQ to lead a team deep into the playoffs. Baker’s a good player, but C.J. has the edge.” Kelly’s comments came during a segment on NFL Total Access, where he analyzed the AFC’s top young quarterbacks.

Why it matters for C.J. Stroud

The endorsement from Kelly carries weight beyond the usual pundit chatter. Kelly’s Hall of Fame resume-five AFC Championship appearances and four Super Bowl trips-gives his words credibility in quarterback circles. Stroud, the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year, has already thrown for over 8,000 yards and 50 touchdowns in his first two NFL seasons. His rapid rise has drawn comparisons to Kelly’s own Bills teams, known for their high-powered offenses.

Kelly’s praise also arrives as Stroud prepares for his third NFL campaign. The Texans, fresh off a playoff berth in 2025, are aiming for a deeper postseason run. Stroud’s development under offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik has been a key factor in Houston’s offensive resurgence. The team’s 2026 training camp opens July 25 in Houston.

What comes next for Stroud and the Texans?

Stroud’s next challenge is proving he can sustain elite play over a full season. After a strong finish in 2025, expectations are sky-high for 2026. The Texans added veteran receiver Stefon Diggs in the offseason, giving Stroud another weapon to stretch defenses. Kelly’s endorsement could fuel narrative momentum heading into the campaign.

The Browns, meanwhile, are in a different phase under Mayfield. Cleveland finished 9-8 in 2025 but missed the playoffs. Mayfield, a former No. 1 overall pick, has shown flashes but hasn’t delivered consistent success. Kelly’s comments won’t change the on-field matchups, but they add another layer to the quarterback debate in the AFC.

Stroud will take the field in Houston’s preseason opener on August 8 against the Carolina Panthers. The Texans open the regular season on September 7 at home against the Indianapolis Colts.
