Carlos Sainz and Williams’ Trust Built on Transparency, Says Vowles

Carlos Sainz and Williams’ trust built on transparency, says Vowles

Williams team principal James Vowles has laid out the team’s blueprint for keeping Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon onside during a grueling rebuild. Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 18 July 2026, Vowles stressed that absolute openness-not spin or delay-is the only way to hold onto drivers in a season where results have lagged.

What happened?

Sainz arrived at Williams after turning down bigger offers elsewhere, banking on the Grove squad’s promise to treat drivers as partners, not commodities. But winter development setbacks threatened to derail that trust. Vowles acted fast. By October 2025, he had already called Sainz first-then Albon-with the raw details of the issues and the fixes in motion.

“Step one is like any relationship: transparency,” Vowles said. “From the first signs of trouble around about October last year, he was the first person I called. Alex was the second. The order is not significant; that is just the sequence in which I did it.”

Why it matters for Carlos Sainz

For Sainz, the early warnings weren’t just polite updates-they were proof the team valued his input. Vowles argued that drivers like Sainz and Albon bring more influence than a 30-minute team briefing ever could. “40 words from Carlos and 40 from Alex are more powerful than me talking for half an hour,” he said.

Sainz himself has pointed to Williams’ culture shift as the reason he’s willing to stay despite the slow start. Gone are the days of drivers being handed a car and told to drive. At Williams, they’re invited to shape upgrades, troubleshoot problems, and fight for progress together.

What comes next?

After nine rounds of the 2026 season, Williams sits eighth in the constructors’ championship with 11 points. The gap to the midfield is real-but so is the path Vowles claims he’s building. “There’s a lot to do,” he admitted, “but there’s a path for them to do it.”

The team’s next moves hinge on turning winter’s lessons into summer speed. Sainz and Albon’s buy-in, Vowles insists, is the difference between a rebuild that stalls and one that surprises.
