Canelo Álvarez rematch off table after Crawford's contract terms

2026-07-19 · Canelo Álvarez · Player Focus

Terence Crawford confirmed a rematch with Canelo Álvarez was never an option after his September 2025 victory. The American boxer, who dethroned the Mexican superstar in a unanimous decision, explained the contract lacked a rematch clause.

What happened in the original fight?

Crawford stunned the boxing world by defeating Canelo in September 2025. Moving up two weight classes, the underdog secured a unanimous decision victory. This win made Crawford a three-division undisputed champion, ending Canelo's reign as super-middleweight king.

Why no rematch?

Crawford stated the contract had no rematch clause. 'Canelo rematch was off the table. There was no rematch clause. If the rematch clause was in the contract then I would have honoured that,' he said. The 38-year-old boxer retired shortly after his historic win.

What's next for Canelo Álvarez?

Canelo's future remains uncertain. Crawford considered a move to middleweight for an undisputed showdown. However, Janibek Alimkhanuly's failed doping test disrupted those plans. The Mexican star may now focus on defending his titles or pursuing new challenges.
