MLB Clears Bryce Harper in FanDuel Gambling Video Probe

Bryce Harper avoids MLB punishment over FanDuel video

Bryce Harper will not face discipline from Major League Baseball after a personalized FanDuel video sparked controversy over alleged enticement of a high-roller. Commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed the decision on 17 Jul 2026, ending speculation about potential league action.

What happened?

Harper recorded a 21-second Cameo-style video for FanDuel in early 2026. The clip became public amid a lawsuit filed by Terry Thompson, who claimed the sportsbook encouraged his gambling addiction while he lost $1.6 million betting $18.5 million over four years. Thompson sued FanDuel in March 2026, alleging the platform pushed him to keep wagering despite clear signs of harm.

Why it matters for Bryce Harper

Harper insisted he believed the video was a simple personalized message and never knew FanDuel planned to use it to retain Thompson as a VIP customer. In an Instagram statement, he said he wouldn’t have recorded the clip had he been aware of the intended use. The slugger remains the Philadelphia Phillies’ All-Star first baseman, a role MLB’s probe did not disrupt.

MLB’s rules and the ruling

Manfred told the Baseball Writers’ Association of America that Harper’s actions did not violate MLB’s collective bargaining agreement. The league’s current rules allow players to appear in ads or make personal appearances for sportsbooks-as long as they don’t encourage baseball betting. That distinction spared Harper from punishment, even as the league scrutinized how the video entered the public eye.

What comes next?

The Phillies continue their postseason push with Harper’s bat leading the charge. The club remains in firm playoff position entering the second half, though the off-field noise briefly threatened to overshadow their on-field progress. FanDuel’s legal troubles and Thompson’s lawsuit are ongoing, but MLB’s decision shifts focus back to the diamond.

Manfred added that the league will keep reviewing how the situation unfolded to prevent similar issues. For now, Harper’s 2026 season remains free of disciplinary blemishes-and the Phillies’ playoff hopes stay intact.
