Bronny James Seizes First Real Chance to Thrive on Lakers

2026-09-21 · Bronny James · Player Focus

Bronny James is entering a key phase of his young NBA career, with a genuine opportunity to carve out his own identity on the Los Angeles Lakers. The shift comes as his father, the legendary LeBron James, is increasingly occupied with global business and diplomatic ventures, potentially reducing the overwhelming scrutiny on the rookie's every move.

The narrative surrounding Bronny has always been inextricably linked to his father. Now, for the first time, the focus is squarely on his own development and performance on the court. The Lakers organization is reportedly giving him the space to grow, aiming to evaluate him as a standalone prospect. This season is his chance to demonstrate his defensive tenacity, shooting improvements, and basketball IQ without the constant, direct comparison to one of the greatest players ever. His progress will be a major storyline for the Lakers as they handle their [fixtures](/fixtures).

While Bronny works in Los Angeles, his father's attention has turned to international projects. In mid-September 2026, LeBron James and actor Will Smith were guests of Angolan President João Lourenço at his presidential palace. The official reason for the visit was the E1 World Championship electric raceboat series, in which both celebrities have invested. Discussions, however, centered on promoting Angola abroad, with a specific emphasis on tourism, cinema, and basketball. The Angolan government is actively pursuing heritage-based tourism to connect with the African diaspora, a history that includes the nation's ports serving as a point of departure for nearly 45% of enslaved Africans brought to the Americas. LeBron's involvement in such high-profile, state-level engagements marks a continued evolution in his post-playing career portfolio, moving further into global business and soft diplomacy.

The Lakers' dynamic is subtly changing. With LeBron engaged in ventures far from the daily grind of the NBA season, the team must cultivate its next generation. Bronny's development becomes even more important in this context. The franchise hopes he can become a reliable rotational piece, contributing energy and defense. His journey this season will be closely watched, not only as LeBron's son, but as a Lakers rookie trying to earn his place. The team's success will depend on how well all its young talent integrates, a process fans can track through our [stats](/stats) page.
