Ben Shelton crushed by Virtanen at Wimbledon: Roddick blasts US men’s failure

Ben Shelton stunned by qualifier Virtanen in five-set Wimbledon upset

Ben Shelton’s Wimbledon campaign collapsed on Day 2 after the fourth seed was stunned by qualifier Otto Virtanen in a five-set thriller at SW19. The 150th-ranked Finn erased a match point to knock out the American, handing Shelton his earliest exit at a Grand Slam since the 2023 Australian Open.

What happened in the match?

Shelton, seeded fourth, started against Virtanen on Monday 1 July with a first-round clash that turned into a five-set rollercoaster. The American held a match point at 5-4 in the fourth set but squandered it, then lost the breaker 7-9. He converted just one of 12 break-point chances and committed unforced errors at pivotal moments. Virtanen, ranked 150th, played the match of his life, firing 22 winners while Shelton managed only 11.

Why Andy Roddick called it a ‘mirror moment’

Andy Roddick, the former Wimbledon finalist and US Open champion, tore into Shelton’s performance on the Served Podcast. “Ben was playing great,” Roddick said. “Loses to a qualifier ranked 150 in the world. At four or five in the world, you lose that match, you kind of have to look in the mirror.” Roddick’s blunt assessment underscored the gap between expectation and execution on grass, where Shelton entered as the top American seed.

How the rest of the US men fared

Taylor Fritz, the fifth seed, was the next American casualty. His quarterfinal clash with Alexander Zverev turned into a straight-sets rout, with Fritz hampered by a lingering knee issue. Fritz had beaten Zverev seven times in a row before Wimbledon, but the German brought his A-game on serve and forehand. Frances Tiafoe pushed his match to five sets against Alexander Bublik but missed nine set points in the third set alone. Despite winning the fourth, he couldn’t close out the decider.

What comes next for Shelton?

Shelton’s grass swing ends with a thud, but the 24-year-old remains inside the ATP top 10. His next stop is the hard-court swing in North America, starting with the US Open Series. The setback won’t derail his rise, but the missed break points and crunch-time errors demand a reset. The question now: can Shelton bounce back stronger before the hard courts begin?
