Ben Shelton admits ‘one of the toughest losses’ after blown opportunity

Ben Shelton suffered a crushing defeat at the 2026 Wimbledon Championships on 8 July, labeling it one of the toughest losses of his career after blowing a golden opportunity in the fourth round.

What happened?

Shelton, the 22-year-old American, pushed deep into Wimbledon but fell 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 to a resurgent Novak Djokovic in a four-hour, five-set thriller. The match stretched past 9 p.m. on Centre Court, ending just before the 10 p.m. curfew. Shelton saved 11 of 14 break points but couldn’t convert his own chances, including a set point in the fourth-set tiebreak.

Why it stings for Ben Shelton

The loss ends Shelton’s best Slam run to date and dashes his bid to become the first American man to reach the Wimbledon semifinals since Andy Roddick in 2009. His serve cracked under pressure late, with Djokovic converting three of his last four break chances. Shelton landed just 58% of first serves in the fifth set, a sharp drop from his usual 65% mark.

What comes next?

Shelton will drop outside the top 10 when new rankings publish on 15 July, ending a six-week stay in the elite group. He’s scheduled to play the Los Cabos Open next week, a chance to reset after the Wimbledon heartbreak. Shelton admitted the loss still hurts and vowed to learn from the missed chances.

Djokovic stays on track

Djokovic, 39, improved to 35-1 in 2026 and eyes a record-equaling 25th Slam title. His experience shone in the fifth-set tiebreak, where he saved two set points before breaking to lead 3-1.
