Anthony Joshua's Fury Fight Set for Cardiff After UK Clause

2026-09-22 · Anthony Joshua · Player Focus

Anthony Joshua's blockbuster fight with Tyson Fury is finally set for Cardiff on Friday, 11 December. The Principality Stadium is the confirmed frontrunner to host the all-British heavyweight clash, with an official announcement expected imminently.

Wembley was once the assumed home for this fight. The path shifted dramatically when organisers and broadcast partner Netflix pushed to move the event to New York's Madison Square Garden. Plans for a Manhattan news conference were even drawn up.

Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn refused to budge. The fighter's contract with Saudi organisers Sela explicitly required the bout to be held in the United Kingdom, a clause Fury's deal lacked. Hearn acknowledged virtually every other party preferred New York, but Joshua's camp stood firm. Their insistence has delivered the fight to British soil, with Cardiff now poised to stage the biggest British boxing event of the century.

Not everyone in Fury's corner is predicting a straightforward win. Peter Fury, Tyson's uncle and former trainer, has warned that Joshua possesses the power to score a knockout. Speaking on the Fight Your Corner podcast, he outlined two stark possibilities.

"He (Fury) is either going to outbox (him) and he will get to Joshua or Joshua is going to find the target and he will clean him out," Peter Fury said. He suggested the first stoppage defeat of Fury's career was a real outcome, putting the fight's result squarely in the balance. The announcement was delayed after both men won warm-up bouts in July, against Mariusz Wach and Kristian Prenga, but a deal is now nearing completion.

The struggle to finalise Joshua versus Fury fits a classic heavyweight pattern. Historical comparisons show these mega-fights are often plagued by delays. Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield first had contracts signed in 1989 but did not meet until 1996, a wait interrupted by prison sentences, shocking defeats, and promoter disputes.

Joshua first called for the fight in April 2016 after winning the world title. While the current saga lacks the external drama of the Tyson-Holyfield era, the core elements of contractual complexity and competing interests are familiar. The wait, however frustrating for fans, often builds a bigger event. The Cardiff fight, nearly a decade in the making, promises not to disappoint.

Logistical details are still being finalised. It remains unclear if the main event will be held in the early hours to suit Netflix's US audience. Fans are now awaiting the official confirmation that will lock in a date eight years in the making.
