Andy Murray’s Wimbledon statue plan faces warnings from sculptor

Andy Murray statue at Wimbledon raises concerns, says artist

Andy Murray’s planned bronze statue at Wimbledon could face structural risks, the sculptor behind the project has warned. The tribute aims to honor the three-time Grand Slam champion’s legacy at the All England Club.

What’s the plan?

The statue would stand outside Wimbledon’s Centre Court, celebrating Murray’s 2013 and 2016 titles and his 2012 Olympic gold. The artist, who has not been named, told BBC Sport the piece must balance durability with artistic vision to survive decades outdoors. Plans include a life-sized figure in his signature pose, racket raised after a backhand.

Why the warning now?

The artist flagged risks tied to Wimbledon’s clay-free courts and the statue’s exposed position. Wind loads and temperature swings could stress the bronze over time, they said. Murray’s camp has not commented on the timeline, but the club confirmed talks are ongoing with the sculptor.

How rare is this honor?

Only a handful of players have statues at Wimbledon-Roger Federer, Serena Williams, and Rod Laver among them. Murray, 39, would join that exclusive group if the project advances. The last statue unveiled was Federer’s in 2022, a year after his retirement.

What happens next?

The artist is refining designs to meet Wimbledon’s strict aesthetic rules while addressing durability. A final go-ahead hinges on funding and planning approvals, likely to take months. Murray, currently ranked 41st, remains active on tour but hasn’t played Wimbledon since 2021 due to hip surgery.
