Alexandre Pantoja Faces Retirement Calls After Second Loss

Alexandre Pantoja's future in the UFC is under intense scrutiny after a second consecutive loss to champion Joshua Van. The former flyweight king dropped a unanimous decision in the main event of UFC 331 this past weekend, prompting calls from a legend for him to consider walking away.

UFC Hall of Famer Demetrious Johnson publicly encouraged Pantoja to retire. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Johnson pointed to Pantoja's age and recent results as reasons to step away. "That’s where my black ass just goes, ‘Dog, ride off into the sunset. You don’t need to get hit. You don’t need concussions anymore. You’ve done your thing,'" Johnson said. He argued that at 36 years old and with two straight losses, the risk may no longer be worth the reward.

Johnson also highlighted a competitive dilemma. Pantoja has already defeated most top contenders, including Brandon Moreno and Brandon Royval. He is teammates with Kyoji Horiguchi, ruling out that fight. Johnson questioned the value of Pantoja facing newcomers at this stage of his career.

Despite the bleak outlook, a viable route to another title shot still exists for the Brazilian. This path hinges entirely on the next flyweight title fight. Pantoja holds a previous victory over the current number one contender, Manel Kape.

If Kape manages to dethrone Joshua Van, Pantoja would have a strong case for an immediate title rematch based on that past win. It creates a strange waiting game. His immediate future is tied to the result of a fight he is not in. A Kape victory could resurrect his championship hopes overnight, while a Van win might solidify his exile from the top.

The main event of UFC 331 saw Joshua Van defend his title with a clear unanimous decision over Pantoja. This loss followed a more definitive stoppage in their first meeting at UFC 323 last year, where Van won by TKO due to injury. Two fights, two losses to the same man.

These back-to-back defeats have stalled the momentum Pantoja built during his championship reign. They mark a significant downturn for a fighter who was once the division's dominant force. The manner of the losses, one a stoppage and one a decision, shows Van has his number.

  • Demetrious Johnson, a respected UFC legend, believes Alexandre Pantoja should consider retirement after his second loss to Joshua Van.
  • Pantoja's clearest path to another title shot relies on Manel Kape defeating champion Joshua Van, due to Pantoja's prior win over Kape.
  • The 36-year-old Brazilian has now suffered consecutive defeats, losing by unanimous decision at UFC 331 after a TKO loss at UFC 323 last year.

The conversation around Pantoja now splits into two camps. One side, voiced by Johnson, sees a decorated champion who has nothing left to prove and everything to lose. The other sees a seasoned veteran with a specific, if narrow, route back to the belt. At 36, time is the one opponent he cannot beat. His next move, whether in the octagon or away from it, will define the final chapter of his notable career.
