Alex Pereira’s UFC light heavyweight title loss to Ankalaev sets up Guskov main event in Abu Dhabi

Alex Pereira’s 2025 UFC light heavyweight title loss to Magomed Ankalaev set the stage for a rematch he won in just 80 seconds: and now Ankalaev defends against Bogdan Guskov at UFC Fight Night 282 in Abu Dhabi on Monday.

What happened?

Magomed Ankalaev captured the 205-pound UFC title in March 2025 by unanimous decision over Alex Pereira, but Pereira stormed back in a rematch on 18 June 2026 and finished Ankalaev in 80 seconds of the first round. That result forced Ankalaev to pull out of a planned return against Khalil Rountree Jr., clearing the way for Guskov to step in on eight days’ notice as the main-event replacement.

Why it matters for Alex Pereira

Pereira’s 80-second knockout of Ankalaev in June 2026 marked his first stoppage win since regaining the belt he lost in March 2025. The victory also extended his personal unbeaten streak to four straight fights and kept him on track for a potential trilogy with Jan Blachowicz or another elite light heavyweight contender. Ankalaev’s defeat, meanwhile, snapped a six-fight win streak and left him scrambling for a new opponent just days before the Abu Dhabi card.

Who is Bogdan Guskov facing?

Guskov (18-3-1 MMA, 4-1-1 UFC) steps up from a majority-draw loss to Jan Blachowicz in December 2025 to face Ankalaev for the interim light heavyweight strap. The 31-year-old Russian has finished four of his last five opponents and now gets arguably the biggest fight of his career after Blachowicz’s injury forced him out of a planned rematch.

What’s next for the division?

Ankalaev, if he recovers from the quick loss to Pereira, is still the division’s mandatory challenger. Pereira, meanwhile, is likely to pursue a third fight with Blachowicz or lock horns with Jiří Procházka, who is angling for a title shot. Guskov’s performance against Ankalaev could vault him into the mix if he shocks the champ in Abu Dhabi on 20 July 2026.
