Alex Pereira slams UFC after Michel Pereira's release

Former UFC Middleweight and Light Heavyweight champion Alex Pereira has blasted the promotion for releasing Michel Pereira after his defeat at UFC Baku on 13 July 2026. Pereira accused referee Herb Dean of failing to call fouls during the fight, including hair pulling and eye pokes, which he believes cost his fellow Brazilian the bout.

What happened at UFC Baku?

Michel Pereira lost a unanimous decision to Shara Magomedov in a fight marred by missed calls from veteran referee Herb Dean. The Brazilian, who had a 10-6 UFC record, was cut from the roster just days after the controversial result. Pereira’s loss was his fourth in five fights, though he had won his previous bout before UFC Baku.

Why is Alex Pereira furious?

Pereira took to Instagram to condemn the UFC’s decision, arguing that Michel Pereira should have been given another fight due to the referee’s errors. He accused Herb Dean of having 'no moral standing' after similar issues in his own interim UFC Heavyweight Championship fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC Freedom 250 last month. Pereira believes the sport is being 'tarnished' by poor officiating.

What does Pereira want to change?

The former champion demanded accountability, stating that many fighters remain silent but could face similar injustices. He called for the UFC to address refereeing standards, though the promotion typically relies on local athletic commissions for official assignments. Despite Pereira’s outrage, there’s no indication the UFC will re-sign Michel or take action against Dean.

What’s next for Alex Pereira?

Pereira’s frustration highlights broader concerns about officiating in MMA. With Dean’s reputation intact, Pereira’s criticism may spark debate but is unlikely to lead to immediate changes. Meanwhile, the former champion continues to push for fairness in the sport.
